first of all i do read that question properly because most of the times you miss the important things of that question while reading it in a hurry. After reading it properly I quickly take a glance towards it and then I start to solve it.

Also what you can do is while reading that problem you can write important things on a paper and as soon as your reading is finished you can take a glance and start solving it.

For problems like Seating arrangement I try to visualize it as soon as I start reading that question so that I get a proper view of it. Small tricks like this will really help you in exams. But the only thing you should first focus is Read it properly at first place.

By the way, whats your trick Parag?

Reading properly is off course one should pay more attention to. For me practicing a lot really helps to understand the problem.
